Soap box derby is a racing program for girls and boys ages 7 years to 21 years. Participants compete driving gravity-powered cars in one of three divisions:
Stock -- lean-forward cars for beginning drivers.
Super Stock -- also a lean-forward car good for beginners, but a little advanced, giving the competitor an opportunity to expand his/her knowledge and skills.
Masters -- lay-down car in which experienced racers may customize their car using their creativity and design skills.
Rallies are sanctioned by either the All-American Soap Box Derby (AA) or National Derby Rallies, Inc. (NDR). AA competitors may be 8 years through 17 years old, and NDR participants may be 7 years to 21 years old.
The Omaha Area Soap Box Derby Association is dedicated to helping children become solid community citizens through the teaching of basic construction skills, teamwork, the spirit of competition, perseverance, and family values.
Omaha's rallies are held at the northwest corner of Seymour Smith Park, 72nd and Washington. Racing begins around 8:30 a.m. and runs until approximately 3:30 p.m. on select Saturdays and Sundays in the spring and fall.
The events are free to the public, and a concession stand is available.
